A few weeks ago during the ESBS spring break Tom, yes... our friend Tom the teacher who loves trees, and Matt, one of the ESBS students, worked a few days with us. Due to the fact that it was spring break for the school we the maintenance team, Nate and Jeremy, were the only ones at camp for the most of the week. What this translates into was that we prepared meals for ourselves because Nathan Shuttlesworth, our cook, also took the week off. When Matt and Tom showed up to work a day with us the opportunity for an age old Camp Lurecrest tradition was just too good to be true. Some of you know what we're getting at... oh yes,... lunch at SUNNYVIEW!
For those who don't know what we're talking about, let me explain the historical context. Back in the dark ages of Camp Lurecrest,... so 5 years ago,... before the time of heaters and insulation, before the time of year-round cooks,... there was one place within a half hour of camp to find food. Sunny Mountain Restaurant and Fish Camp, affectionately called by the many fine men and women who served through those dark ages of the off-season here at Lurecrest as.... "Sunnyview". Located just a few miles up highway 9 most who have drove from Charlotte have passed it by, never knowing that the vast majority of meals eaten during the Lurecrest off-season in years past were from the fine double-wide trailer sitting across from McGuinn's gas station.
Nowadays here at Lurecrest many more of the restaurants in Chimney Rock are staying open through the off-season, we have the mighty Ingles grocery store, we have refrigerators and kitchens that stay on all year round, and we even have a wonderful full-time cook Nathan Shuttlesworth. The tragedy of today's ammenities is the loss of the ever gracious and giving Sunnyview... who was always there for us, when we were without... providing full breakfasts for the measly two dollars and change. Nate and Jeremy felt it a priviledge to have the opportunity to partake once more at Sunnyview, dragging Tom along too... for he has had many fond memories of Sunnyview much as some of you have... probably too many.
The experience was Matt's first at Sunnyview, we felt blessed to indoctrinate him to a camp experience like no other. The verdict... Sunny Mountain Cheeseburgers all around, plenty of french fries for everyone, some green beans for Tom, and a load of hushpuppies for big Nate... all of course lathered in ketchup... mmmm. We hope you all fondly think back to the days of Sunnyview, and if you haven't ever had the experience ask us the next time you come up to take you and you'll have a memory that will last a lifetime.
We salute you Sunnyview, we cannot express our gratitude enough.
